Integrated Prevention and Control of Air Pollution and Ecological Safety Key Lab of Henan

The lab includes an ecological team lead by Fu Lei, the awardee of The National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars; geography preponderant backbone of Henan Province and young experts of Henan Meteorological Bureau. It is a interdisciplinary research team of geoscience and ecology, including atmospheric science, environmental science, soil ecology, landscape ecology, plant diversity, agronomy, natural geography, agro meteorology, agricultural remote sensing, GIS analysis, and land management and planning. It is a creative team and there are 34 researchers, including one awardee of The National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars and four special professors of Henan University.

The lab has advanced equipment worth 20million Yuan and introduces new equipment worth 2.6million Yuan. It has 2000 square kilometers experiment room and expands 200 square kilometers this year. The lab stays open and cooperates with others from home and abroad. It also invites famous scholars from home and abroad to deliver lectures and starts cooperation no less than 15 times every year, selects excellent scholars to study abroad no less than 3 person and attend domestic and foreign academic conference no less than 30 person.

The lab has 3 research directions.

1. Research on air pollution source

Analysis of air pollution source, aiming at solving the heavily polluted weather in Henan—smog, many cities carry out research on fine particles formation regulation and source, establish statistics of pollution source emission. Analyze different kinds of pollution sources’ contribution rate to the formation of fine particles and find the pollution source which has the highest contribution rate.

The lab mainly researches on the relativity of fine particles, near-surface ozone pollution andthe weather conditions. It also aims at finding out the factors: the formation regularities of fine particles, the regularities of near-surface ozone pollution, the track of ozone predecessor, and the effects of farmland water and fertilizer management.

2. The simulation and early warning of air pollution

Research the numerical simulation of air pollutant’s transmission and sedimentation. Try to analyze constant polluted weather’s background, atmospheric circulation form and heavily polluted weather’s boundary layer. It also tries to restore the pollution process, then diagnose the change of atmospheric physical quantity and analyze the transmission, expansion and sedimentation system. These all base on numerical simulation.

Research environmental capacity and disaster warning of air pollution. Analyze air pollutant’s transmission, expansion and sedimentation efficiency under different circumstances and calculate environmental capacity under different emission. Analyze heavily polluted weather’s meteorological threshold and fetch precursor information from those physical quantities and prepare alerting technology of disastrous pollution event. Try to realize the short and middle-term prediction of air pollutant’s track and report it immediately.

3. Ecological safety and prophylactic-therapeutic measures

Research on the effect of air pollution on urban and rural ecosystem. Study how the main types of ecological system’s structure and function forest, farmland, wetland, road and residence. Respond to air pollution. Quantize air pollution’s effect on ecological productivity, carbon exchange water and fertilizer efficiency. Establish appropriate and integrated assessment system and make out air pollutant’s “tolerance threshold” and purifying capacity.

Research on regional eco planning and air pollution protection. Study on government policy and the changeable weather quality scenario simulation technology in the future. Try to find out the way to regulate weather through ecology system management and landscape configure, such as recycle straw and reduce straw burning; fertilize scientific and reduce the release of ammonia; reduce dust and converse nitrogen oxide using plants. Study scientific emission of heavily polluted enterprise and optimize special layout, driving restriction in city and optimization track; artificial smog and fog suppression.
